Room for the night

Crazy room story

We decided to wing it and find a room when we got there. And when we did, everything was booked. We were walking hotel to hotel, in the rain, all full. Finally we decided to get some food and a beer, so we ducked into Mitic. Ruben, the first of many helpful and incredibly nice people we met in Sagres, was our bartender. So we threw it out there, know of a room for rent? He said yes! Go to the surf shop next door, ask the owner to call the lady who rents rooms above the bar. So I did. And she was full. But the surf shop owner was determined to help me. He busted out a rolladex (literally) and started making calls. Five calls in he smiled and said “wait here”. A woman on a bicycle rolls up and I’m told to follow her . Her rooms are full, but she has a friend. She speaks ZERO english but through my spanglish and new found talent in charades – we manage. She takes me to her neighborhood and starts banging on doors. Finally she finds a woman, who is standing on her roof (!) that has a room. 30 EURO for a clean, lovely room in walking distance from Mitic and our new favorite strip of bars and restaurants. Success!! Its stories like these and people like this that make the travel experience.
